Holistic Nursing is a specialty that focuses on the art and science of caring for the whole person. It is based on the belief that dynamic mind-body-spirit interactions are ongoing and impact a person's ability to grow and heal. Holistic nurses aim to promote health and wellness as they facilitate their client's growth and healing. Health is a perception of wellness, and a quality of life. Holistic nurses work with people in all settings and at all phases of life. Their primary goal is to facilitate people to live their lives as fully as possible, in all situations.
The American Holistic Nurses' Certification Corporation (AHNCC) seeks to be a leader in credentialing nurses in the precepts of Holistic Nursing;
promote recognition of Holistic Nursing as a specialty that is based in a Code of Ethics and Core of Knowledge and Competencies; and advance the legitimate role of Holistic Nursing in the health care system.
Certification in Holistic Nursing
AHNCC is a non-profit, autonomous organization responsible for the development, administration and maintenance of the Holistic Nurses' Certification Exams. It is the only national credentialing corporation for Holistic Nursing, a nursing specialty recognized by the American Nurses’ Association. Professional certification is available at three levels of nursing practice.
• Holistic Nurse, Board Certified (HN-BC)
For registered nurses who do not hold a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
• Holistic Baccalaureate Nurse, Board Certified (HNB-BC)
For registered nurses with Baccalaureate Degrees in Nursing.
• Advanced Holistic Nurse, Board Certified (AHN-BC)
For registered nurses who hold a Graduate Degree in Nursing.
Endorsement of Holistic Nursing Programs
AHNCC endorses holistic nursing programs that provide a curriculum consistent with AHNA Standards and Core Values of Holistic Nursing Practice.
AHNCC is committed to values that enhance professional practice and contribute to competency in Holistic Nursing practice. Values such as integrity, fairness, excellence, innovation, holism, mutuality, empowerment, caring, healing, and transformation provide the basis for Holistic Nursing practice. These values provide a foundation for the Holistic Nursing Certification Examination. The Holistic Nursing Core Values and Standards for Practice are available through The American Holistic Nurses Association.
